Antoine‘s timeless machine
Antoine wanted a pure road bicycle, one with classic looks and a color reminiscent of the bike his father rode when he introduced him to cycling. Efficient, responsible, and durable are some of the keywords that define Antoine’s build. He wanted a timeless bike and to meet his request, we chose components that were understated, manufactured in small batches and comfortable.
The frame is made entirely of Columbus tubing, from the HSS series. This series offers large diameters(44mmfor the downtube, before hydroforming). This allows to optimize power transfer, and their very thin wall thicknesses reduce the weight of the frame.
The bottom bracket is a T47 standard. This choice makes it possible to increase the weld surface in this area of high mechanical stresses and thus to limit the deformations. This technique makes it possible to give the bike a sportier behavior.
Antoine opted for internal cable routing, an option that requires a full day's work in the workshop, and a seatpost clamp integrated into the seat stays, for a clean look.
In his constant search for understated looks, Antoine selected the Campagnolo Potenza group in a brushed aluminum finish, as well as a White Industries crankset, which combines classic appearance and performance.
The Paul seatpost, paired with a Berthoud saddle (made in France) also meets Antoine’s goals: understated looks, comfort and craftsmanship.
The wheels are laced by hand, using linseed oil. This process provides excellent durability, as the oil acts as a threadlocker on the spoke heads after drying. We used tubeless-compatible Mavic Open Pro UST rims, Hope RS4 hubs, and Sapim CX-Ray spokes in a rare stainless steel finish. The resulting assembly offers an extremely dynamic behavior, while retaining the reliability and excellent braking of a machined aluminum rim.
The paint echoes the bikes of yesteryear, like that of Antoine's father, which was the main the inspiration for this project. The finish was given a subtle modern touch, thanks to fine metallic paint and thicker pinstripes, better suited to the diameters of modern tubes.
When looking at my bike, I can see what I put in it, what I had envisioned. First ride on this bike is a bit like making a new friend. We‘re both going to have a blast.
